Blue and Grey

The news that cannot have escaped your attention is that 507001 has emerged from Birkenhead North depot resplendent in a (slightly adapted version of) British Rail blue and grey livery. The livery has been applied using vinyl wraps to commemorate the impending withdrawal of the units from service.
The heritage livery is an initiative of Merseytravel, Merseyrail, Angel Trains and Stadler, with wraps supplied by Stewart Signs.
In the two days 507001 has been out in service, not only has it drawn admiring glances from the travelling public, it has also attracted much attention from the enthusiast community, both here on Merseyside and further afield. Nobody can now deny the affection that these units are held in.
The launch of the retro livery has also drawn people’s attention to the impending withdrawal of the units, and will bring us welcome publicity as we pursue this preservation project.
If you haven’t already seen it, there is an excellent video on the Merseyrail YouTube channel showing the behind-the-scenes work to get the unit reliveried.
