Your 507 Needs You!

Keeping 507001 in working order is a big job. Could you join Team 507 to help keep our iconic electric train on the rails?
Since 507001 arrived in Derby in January 2025, we have held regular work parties where a group of society volunteers spend a day, or even a whole weekend, aboard the unit.
No two work parties are the same, but regular jobs include:-
- Overhaul of electrical and mechanical components
- Safety checks and tests to keep the train in running condition
- Cleaning the train inside and out
It’s only thanks to our volunteers that events like the recent test track run were possible. It’s a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun and a chance to meet some like-minded people.
We want as many people as possible to get involved. So, if you loved these trains and want to see the last survivor preserved for posterity, could you join us at Derby in the future?
We particularly want to hear from people with a railway background – not necessarily on 507s, but other diesel and electric trains too. Anyone with mechanical engineering skills (for example, from working on cars, buses or other vehicles) is also welcome.
If you think you have the skills we need, contact us to talk about joining as a working member.
We do ask volunteers to sign up as a member – this is for insurance and governance purposes. Once you’ve done that, we can add you to our invite list for future work parties.
Sorry, but we can only allow people aged 18 and above to work on the unit at Litchurch Lane.
